October is National Orthodontic Health Month

For many of us, October can mean fall weather and the excitement of Halloween. However, for orthodontists, October is also a very special month because October is National Orthodontic Health Month. This month is a month to celebrate and recognize the beautiful, healthy smiles that orthodontists create.

Here are some fun facts about orthodontics in celebration of Orthodontic Health Month from Dr. Graham Gardner, Dr. Natalie La Rochelle, and Dr. Dana Tang at Gardner and La Rochelle Orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment is a way of straightening or moving teeth to improve their appearance and how they work. Braces and invisible aligners are some of the more commonly used appliances to straighten teeth during orthodontic treatment.

While many people may think that orthodontics is only for children and teens, orthodontics are quickly becoming more popular with adults. Did you know that more than one million adults are currently receiving orthodontic treatment?

October can be a month filled with candy and sugary foods, making it so important that you take especially good care of your teeth during this month (whether you are currently in braces or not). The American Association of Orthodontists shares these tips to protect your braces and other appliances during this time:

  1. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy Halloween candies and snacks. Take a pass on things like caramel, gummies, licorice, and jelly beans. It may be especially hard to resist during this time, but you’ll be able to enjoy these treats sooner if you take good care of your orthodontic appliances now.

  2. Avoid hard treats. Things like nuts and nut-filled treats, chips and popcorn could potentially break brackets and bands.

  3. Brush Your Teeth! Sweets and treats can cause cavities. Brushing and flossing are more important than ever during this treat-filled season. Don’t forget to floss and fluoride too!
